In , the Lighthouse Board requested that a lighthouse and fog signal be established at or near Point San Pablo to guide the many steamers and sailing vessels passing through the strait. East Brother Island in Wharf was moved to the east side of the island in Photograph courtesy National Archives The government attempted to purchase a tract of land on Point San Pablo, but could not come to terms with the landowners.
When the appeal was delayed, anxious boats captains sent a petition to the lighthouse inspector in San Francisco suggesting that the lighthouse be built on East Brother Island, which was already owned by the government. The Brothers , consisting of East Brother Island and West Brother Island, lie roughly 1, feet off Point San Pablo, and they, along with the Sisters on the opposite side of the strait, had been reserved for military purposes by order of President Andrew Johnson in The lighthouse plans called for a three-story tower attached to a two-story Victorian dwelling having three rooms per floor.
The space between the studs in the outer walls was filled with bricks and mortar, strengthening the structure and providing some insulation from the raucous fog signal. A wharf was built on the north side of the island. Besides the lighthouse, a water tank, fog signal building, storage shed, and a domed cistern surrounded by a large rain catchment basin were eventually built on the island, leaving precious little room for anything else.
Just before sunset on March 1, , the keepers lit the lamp in a revolving fourth-order Fresnel lens sending forth brilliant beams of light across San Pablo Strait. The fog signal made its debut exactly two months later, alternately sounding eight and four-second blasts, separated by twenty-four seconds of silence.

Egypt[ edit ] This apotropaic wand shows a procession of protective deities. Such a wand would have been used in rituals associated with birth and would perhaps be used to draw a magical circle around the mother and child. Walters Art Museum , Baltimore. Apotropaic magical rituals were practiced throughout the ancient Near East and Egypt. Fearsome deities were invoked via ritual in order to protect individuals by warding away evil spirits. In ancient Egypt, these household rituals performed in the home, not in state-run temples were embodied by the deity who personified magic itself, Heka.
One of the most commonly found magical objects, the ivory apotropaic wand see also Birth Tusk , gained widespread popularity in the Middle Kingdom ca. Likewise, protective amulets bearing the likenesses of gods and goddesses like Taweret were commonly worn. Water came to be used frequently in ritual as well, wherein libation vessels in the shape of Taweret were used to pour healing water over an individual.
In much later periods when Egypt came under the Greek Ptolemies , stele featuring the god Horus were used in similar rituals; water would be poured over the stele and—after ritually acquiring healing powers—was collected in a basin for an afflicted person to drink. We started the season by extending the trench 3m on the south-east-side and 5m on the north-west side with the help of a JCB and its lovely driver, Martin. The main reasons behind this were to find the extent of our large early Bronze Age burnt mound, and to identify any associated archaeology lying on the periphery of the mound itself. Almost as soon as we stopped excavating with the machine we found a large rim sherd of mid-Bronze Age cord-impressed pottery in the northern extension of the trench.
When this area was cleaned further, more sherds of the same pot were found and we were able to fit the pieces together, giving us an idea of its original shape and size see earlier blog post for more details here. Also identified upon the opening of the northern extension were the articulated remains of a sheep sitting within a sub-circular but poorly defined pit. Due to its position cutting through a system of alluvial silts covering the burnt mound, it is relatively modern, but still provided our students with the opportunity to excavate articulated remains, which is a bit of a rarity at the Bradford Kaims.
Bone expert Tom Fox cleaning up the post-Medieval sheep in Trench 6. In the centre of Trench 6, our investigation was focussed on a complex sequence of post holes and pits just north-east of our wooden trough, which make up a variety of structures and associated burnt features which interface directly with several burnt mound deposits.
